Labour claims Glasgow victory as count continues

Party candidate Willie Bain hailed the result, saying: “It’s a great endorsement for Gordon Brown in his efforts to set the economy back on track and it shows the General Election is very much game on.”

SNP campaign coordinator Stewart Hosie, MP for Dundee East, said: “We are on course to achieve our best result in this constituency for 35 years.

“It appears that this has not been enough” to take the seat.

Turnout was reported by Glasgow City Council to be just 33 per cent.

The BNP was widely tipped by count watchers to have come third in the election although it may not have polled the 5% need to save its £500 deposit.

BNP candidate Charlie Baillie said: “I am predicting that this evening we will produce the best result ever for the BNP in Scotland.

“We have contested council by-elections several times, and we also contested the European elections where we narrowly failed to get the deposit back by 404 votes.

“I confidently predict that we shall easily save our deposit and possibly more.

“Tonight will be the best result ever for the BNP in Scotland. We are looking forward to contesting next year’s General Election with great optimism.”

The by-election was caused by the resignation of former Commons Speaker Michael Martin, now Lord Martin, over his handling of the Westminster expenses controversy.

The Labour win will be big boost for Mr Brown who, with his wife Sarah, campaigned in the constituency.
