Sudan woman goes on trial for wearing trousers

Author: By Mohamed Osman, Associated Press

Some of the protesters are wearing trousers in solidarity with Lubna Hussein,
who faces 40 lashes on the charge of “indecent dressing.”

Hussein was among 13 women arrested on 3 July in a raid by the public order
police on a popular cafe.

Ten were flogged at a police station two days later, but Hussein and two
others decided to go on trial.

Hussein told reporters she expects a swift sentence and that the court is
unlikely to allow an appeal. She says she is “ready for what may come.”

Police have been deployed around the courthouse since early Tuesday. Media are
kept at bay.
