Inc. Magazine is a monthly periodical for entrepreneurs and small business owners with circulation nearing 690,000, according to estimates from 2007. Every year since 1982, Inc. has released a list ranking the top fastest growing, privately owned companies in America. In 1982, the list included the top 100 companies. One year later, the list expanded five times to become the Inc. 500. Now, thanks to the internet, Inc. has “incorporated” the list into its website and expanded it to include a ranking of the 5,000 fastest growing private companies.
Companies that make the Inc. 5000 are entitled to a series of privileges on Inc. Magazine’s private business networking website, IncBizNet. Privately owned business can get registered on IncBizNet for free. Once on the site, entrepreneurs get a slew of web marketing services – a corporate profile, a blog, press release distribution, and a community of other like-minded successful business executives to network with and share ideas.
While the Inc. list covers all industries, it was surprising to see that real estate companies made a good showing on the 2008 list, even with the slumping housing market. The industry received its own “Top 50 Real Estate Companies” list this year. Since these companies are usually self start-ups, it’s no surprise Inc. Magazine would be sure to pay attention to that particular industry.
Although the housing market has hit a bit of a slump, many real estate companies still made the 2008 list because it actually takes into consideration the past four years of revenue growth. Since part of those four years includes the huge housing boom of a couple years ago, several of the biggest boom states have made a good showing. Florida tops the list with eight of their real estate companies making the Top 50, while Illinois, Nevada and Texas come in next with 4-5 companies from each state being honored.
Although one might assume the Top 50 Real Estate Companies would only include actual brokerages, there were actually a variety of real estate-related companies to make the list. While 21 were brokerages, the others are made up of the often overlooked building and construction industry, as well as real estate investment companies. Fifteen involved construction, while eight involved investing.
One of the most unique companies on this year’s list was GetMyHomesValue. Located in Lancaster, PA, GetMyHomesValue connects home sellers nationwide with real estate agents in their region. Over a three year period, the company saw revenue growth of 786%, and now offers a full-suite of internet marketing services, CRM tools, and coaching tips to real estate agents that subscribe to their services.
Inc. Magazine holds an annual awards ceremony and conference each year for the Inc. 5000. They invite owners not just from the Inc. 500 but from the Inc. 5000 as well. With past keynote speakers such as Marshall Goldsmith, Thomas Friedman and former President Bill Clinton, it is a wonderful opportunity for networking and learning and one which every small business owner hopes to attend one day.
