Some of the things that many facility managers deal with every day are the concerns about chemical safety. The many different chemicals they have, on site, will make life difficult for these professionals if and when the drums leak onto the floor. This creates a spill and they all know what that means. By using any of the various sizes of spill containment pallets, within their chemical handling processes, they can help prevent a lot of those events from happening.
EPA has stated their requirements for a secondary containment system for all chemicals that are dangerous. These pallets can be used for that purpose as they have the abilities to perform this task. They are fabricated from a tough material that will not react to most chemicals. They are also non toxic, in and of themselves. Having somewhere for the leaked chemicals to go instead of on the floor is an important consideration when leaking is all but certain.

Most of these pallets will come in various sizes, from a 1, 2, 4 or 8 drum models to the 1 and 2 tank configurations. They are set up specifically this way so that chemical handlers will know they have the capacity to hold and contain the combined contents of all containers that are set on them. They are also wide and deep enough that not drums will get hit when transferring them from place to place.
Some will come with coverings to ensure the safe storage outside in inclement weather. These covers can be made to be lockable so access control can be implemented. This is important with those substances that must be constantly reported as far as amount on hand and used to governing authorities.
The main part of these spill containment pallets is the ability and the capacity to hold all contents of any drums placed on them. The leaked material can fall through the grates that have been inserted in the top platform. The bottom reservoir is what makes these pallets unlike any others and is the key to the safety these provide.
With this system, and a leak, it flows down and is contained. Without this system, and a leak occurs, it goes onto the floor and is subjected to all of the regulations necessary to fulfill the requirements of governmental authorities. The round robin of reporting this spill, having the line shut down and the clean up will commence. This is followed by verification and the follow up reports that are all too common. This is not the way to spend a production day and should be avoided.
More specifically, the process involves making sure everyone is out of the area and barriers erected to ensure they do not come back. Personnel, with protective gear, is called in and they proceed with the clean up. This is a costly process that does not end until the clean up and validation is received, often by those governmental bodies, for a resumption of work.
The decision can be made to prevent a spill from happening in the first place. This can be accomplished by having these spill containment pallets in the system. They can prevent the costly clean up, the embarrassment from the news papers and the reputation degradation from the potential clients the company may have lost.
