Infant Sleep Pattern

A new baby in the house can disrupt everyone’s sleeping habits. A baby will set their life time sleeping pattern by 3-months. Read on for tips and suggestions to encourage and recognize consistent sleeping patterns for your infant.

A new baby will sleep a lot, but not for long periods. The littlest infant needs to sleep and eat at their own discretion. Funny huh! Babies having discretion of their OWN. As much as possible you should respond quickly to their need to eat and sleep on demand. I guess I don’t have to tell you to keep the sleeping infant close at hand. the pattern will go awake, eat, and poop/ Unless ill this is the cycle a new baby will concentrate on. You are to develop consistency. Make a chart if you have to so that you can remember.

If you don’t want a bunch more problems, have the baby sleep alone in his or her bed at night. The baby will nap well if wrapped in a baby blanket or snuggled up to your chest. They will get very used to sleeping this way and bad habits can develop. Don’t fall into the parent trap of putting them in your bed with you too often. It can be unsafe and breaks any sleep pattern training that you are working on.

Don’t give up and stress out if the baby doesn’t take to your desired schedule immediately. It takes time and dedication. Keep your mind focussed on what you want to accomplish, a life time sleep pattern for baby.

At dusk darken the bedroom where the baby sleeps and discourage stimulation other than quiet time. Keep the household quiet and somber. At nightfall take care of the needs of the baby; sleep, eat, and poop. Then, of course, lay the baby down again. Resist with the baby. This will only disrupt the cycle you are trying to imprint. This tip will encourage your newborn to sleep at night and be awake during the daytime.

Some feel it is easier for the infant to be in the parents room or even in their bed. When nursing this can help gain access to both mother and baby. The comforting warm of the mother will definitely help the baby sleep well. “Safe sleep” should be stressed here if you put the baby in bed with you. Limit the number of pillows and blankets nearest the infant. Smothering is a very real risk or rolling over the baby while you are asleep.i

By about three months of age, it is fine to put the baby to sleep in a crib, even in another room. It is important for the baby to learn to sleep alone, and this is the best age to begin that. The longer you wait, the harder it will be for the baby to develop this habit. It may be necessary to comfort the baby with singing, patting, or a little cuddle and then return to the crib many times for the first 1-2 weeks. Gradually, the baby will learn how to sleep alone during the night, and baby’s sleep and parent’s sleep will be easier.

After a while you will notice, almost as if by accident, that your baby sleeps and baby naps at regular intervals effortlessly.
