The Definition of Microtia

Microtia is a birth defect that causes the ear to form smaller than normal. This can be one ear or both ears that are affected by Microtia. Microtia is a birth defect that is not caused by anything that the woman does while pregnant with the child.

The consumption of alcohol or other harmful substances is not the cause of Microtia in the unborn child. There are several syndromes that may accompany a child born with Microtia. Children born with this birth defect usually only have one ear that is affected. When a child is born with only one affected ear it is called Unilateral Microtia. Bilateral Microtia is the rare case of both of the ears being affected.

A child born with Microtia may have a hard time with wearing glasses and/or earphone. Microtia can also accompany syndromes that add a great difficulty to the balance of a child. Other syndromes that Microtia may be accompanied with in a child can cause organs such as the kidney and/or heart to have issues. There are four different levels of Microtia that a child can be born with. The first level is when a child has a fairly normal ear that is just a little bit smaller than the other ear. The second level of Microtia is when the child has part of an external ear develop. This results in some hearing loss. A child with the second level of Microtia can have an ear canal that is closed off externally. The child will be able to hear sounds, but not well.

There are a couple main ways surgeons may perform plastic surgery to help a child born with Microtia. The first way is unique and requires making a living ear out of skin and other tissue removed from the patient’s body. The second way used is to make an artificial ear. These two different techniques used to help children with Microtia have a night and day difference. One way creates a living ear made from real living skin and cartilage from the child. Where as the second technique of fixing the ear is by using plastic and other types of artificial material to create a new ear. Children born with Microtia are usually worked on right a way to help repair or fix anything possible using plastic surgery.
