If you can afford a state of the art home security system, you should invest in one. These systems are proven to deter crime. Not only houses with alarm systems less likely to be broken into (criminals themselves admit this), but in the event a home with a system is invaded, it is likely that much less damage will occur, because the alarm sirens will sound and scare the burglar off.
However, not everyone has the money to have a burglar alarm installed in their homes. The good news is that there are several things you can do yourself to reduce the chances that you will find yourself a victim of a break-in.
Did you know that every 15 seconds in our country a burglary happens? For this reason, any effort you put into reducing your chances of a home invasion is wise. Even if you do not own your own home but instead rent an apartment, you still need to be aware of home security issues that can keep you safe.
One useful thing you can do is to remove all hollow core exterior doors and replace them with doors that are made of solid hardwood or even reinforced steel doors. Nearly eight percent of the time, a burglar makes his way into a home by way of the door. Often he will simply kick it in. The easiest doors to kick in are the hollow ones.
The frames around your doors are also important and likely are often overlooked in home security. No matter how strong or solid your doors are, if you have cheap and flimsy door frames, you are vulnerable. You should put in ones made of stainless steel or solid metal.
Lastly, look around your house and take note of all the exterior doors that are next to windows. A burglar can break the window and reach in to unlock the door. In order to make this less of a danger, replace those door locks with double cylinder locks and dead bolts.
