Getting Better at Texas Holdem Poker

by Billy Adult

If you really want to become a good player of poker games such as Texas Holdem you need to have ways in which you can actually improve your game. Certainly one of the best ways available for a person to be able to do this is by taking part in free online Texas hold em games or tournaments.

The hand selection changes as well when playing at a table with fewer players. A winning hand could be anything with a single Ace or King, and of course any hand you’d consider to be good at a full poker table is great for Short Hand Texas Holdem Poker games.

When you play Texas hold’em poker at a top rated poker room you’ll find there are many incentives offered to keep you happy and coming back. These include deposit bonuses and special prizes. You can even win free seats to big money tournaments.

If you ARE going to play offsuit cards in texas holdem, then make sure that they have big card value. A hand like AQo is affected less by the fact that it isn’t suited because it’s other obvious benefits make up for the disadvantage of being offsuit.

Players use a combination of their hole cards and the community cards to make their best five card hand. Action is guaranteed because two players must post forced bets or “blinds” before the beginning of every hand. Players must decide whether they will fold, call or raise in order beginning with the player immediately to the left of the big blind, this is where game strategy begins.

A lot can be read into timing. I would actually be more accurate in naming this tell “false timing” to give the impression of thought, or indecision. In its most common form you find this poker tell combining with the first point. Players who wait for a long time, often going into their time bank.

If you can guess your opponent’s cards and then bet accordingly, it implies you have a desirable degree of Texas Hold’em skills. You must observe other players and their betting behavior to get an indication of their hands. You must be spontaneous in your betting so that your opponents can never guess your next move.

Every poker decision, whether it be to bet, raise, check/call, check/fold, check/raise has an expectation of success or failure. Those that will lose you money in the long run are said to have negative expected value (-EV).

If somebody is always calling, don’t bet into these people with the idea of bluffing. If a very conservative player re-raises you, muck your cards. Be unpredictable. Don’t raise the same number of chips all the time.

Though the basic rules are simple, more important is to develop an instinct to know when your opponents are bluffing and when they actually have a good hand. And not showing your emotions while playing is a good trick to put others on a wrong track.

Unfortunately, when most beginners start out they end up losing money. Then in an effort to win back what they have lost, they end up losing even more. So, how do you avoid becoming like most beginners? If you are in the midst of a big losing streak, how do you get to playing winning poker?

Being aware of the concept of relative position as part of your no limit holdem poker playing strategy can give you an advantage at the table. If you are last to act pre-flop but consider it likely that you will be in a bad position relative to the raiser after the flop then you can tighten up your starting hand requirements.

You need to know your cards, what your opponent might be holding, how each community card affects your hand and the hand of your opponents, not to mention how the amount they bet and how they bet indicates what they may or may not be holding.

Even preflop you must think along expected value lines. You may be holding AJs in the small blind. Six players, most of them very loose, limp before you. A raise is in order. Think in terms of expected value or pot equity.

Don’t expect overnight success, many poker novices assume making big money is easy but life is not like that! It takes hard work, dedication and a lot of practice to become a successful player. You can do it but be prepared to work hard for goals and don’t try and do it to quickly.
