Now I like form. I like to see lots of it – I hate to put money on a horse that has not got at least a few races under its belt, and this year’s St. Leger looks like a clash between some horses that haven’t seen a lot of action since June.
Frozen Fire and Look Here are the two favourites with the bookies, despite having a quiet summer. Frozen Fire won the Irish Derby well, but Irish Derby winners are often only winners of the Irish Derby and little else. I don’t think Frozen Fire is worth 2/1.
Look Here has bags of talent, but has not run since conning the bookies at the Oaks when romping home at 33/1. That was back on the 6th of June and what has changed in the minds of the bookmakers? The odds of 4/1 are based on that one race at Epsom, and this horse has not raced since. The Oaks is a tough race, sure – but it was at the start of the season. Another popular filly is Unsung Heroine – but again, with only two races behind her, this is nothing to go on.
So I’m looking for something else. Doctor Fremantle and Conduit are two horses that have a few runs behind them. Conduit is a good 6/1 with most bookies, and Doctor Fremantle can be found at twice those odds – be sure that these odds will fall on the day. Doctor Fremantle’s form on softer ground makes those odds of 12/1 look great value.
If either of these horses wins, then Sir Michael Stoute will pick up his first St. Leger. He seems to have been waiting forever to win one, and I’m not going to punt large on it – perhaps an each-way bet on Doctor Fremantle at those odds. It’s been a long, wet summer and the best betting is sure to be on the Arc. But at 12/1, why not…….
