Island Hopping in the Andamans

In July 2016, I decided to travel to the Andaman Islands because everyone I knew who had been there, only had good things and splendid descriptions to convey about the beaches, marine life and the breathtaking views. So here’s my week long journey island hoping through the Andamans

Port Blair

This capital city of Andaman and Nicobar Island is the largest city of the Union Territory, named after the Lieutenant Archibald Blair who established a colony here in the year 1789. Being a gateway to the pristine islands of the Andamans and undoubtedly one of the most beautiful places with remarkably clean and serene beaches. Visited by thousands of tourist from all over the world. This wonderful place is an oceanic treasure land with its marine life thriving on its wide starched coastal beaches. Known for its eye-catching vistas and famous beaches, this place is heaven for most travellers. Commute here is a jiffy, one can get to anywhere in the city within 15 mins. Dont miss out on the “Light & Sound show” at the Cellular Jail. The saga of heroism of our freedom fighters can be witnessed here, a place where they were kept under rigorous imprisonment during the British regime in India. Another noteworthy visit is the Ross Island, 25 mins from Port Blair by the Aberdeen Jetty. This former British Head-Quarters is a treat to visit and watch the trees that have taken over all ancient buildings.

Havelock Island

Havelock is the place to be, if you are keen to scuba dive. The coastal water surrounding these islands are the abode of one of the richest coral reef ecosystem is the world, making this a unique lifetime experience. There is always something fascinating or challenging about venturing into the underwater world. You will be mesmerized by clouds of colourful fish, your curiosity pricked by the mysterious remains of sunken ships or your creativity awakened by the art of underwater photography. The Symphony Palm beach has beautiful wooden cottages by the sea to rent out on this island which should be added to your to-do list.

Radhanagar Beach

Not many words that can describe this spell bound beach because a visit here will leave you speechless. The Radhanagar beach also known as ‘Asia’s best beach’ has fine white sand, turquoise blue waters and peace and serenity as the hallmark of this beautiful landmass.

Elephant Beach

The island derives its name because it is believed that the elephants walked here throwing down gigantic trees. Considered the best place to Snorkel and Dive it also caters to adventure enthusiasts with various water sports. Because of its clear blue conditions and beautifully rich marine life one can spot rare species of fish by simply taking a glass bottomed boat out. The almost sculptural giant trees on the island are very interesting to take note of & of course get clicked with!

Baratang Island

Baratang Island is situated between Middle and South Andamans. The road to Baratang from Port Blair passes through the Jarawa Tribe Reserve also known as Andaman Trunk Road. One has to drive through the Jarawa Reserve area (Jarawa: a tribal of Andamans) on convoy to get toBaratang. If your lucky you might chance on a spotting of this aboriginal tribe.Baratang is famous for its Mangrove Forests and Lime Stone caves. Located 50 minutes away by sea from the Baratang Jetty. The journey to the caves excites everyone as it takes you between the dense forest of mangrove plantations and crocodile infested waters. For some it’s an adventure and experience of a lifetime. Baratang is one of the few select places on the earth where limestone caves can be found.

Ross and Smith Islands

2 secluded islands far away from the hustle bustle of the city are connected to each other by a thin bar of sand. The island pair stands as a silent reminder of ‘Beauty lies in Connecting’. Furthermore, Ross & Smith islands are home to the Olive Ridley turtles, be there in the right place and at the right time and you may just spot a turtle nesting! The twin islands can be reached from Diglipur with prior permission from the Forest Office located there. This island should not be missed while travelling here.

Port Blair

Leave your last day in the Andamans in leisure .Walking around Port Blair is a beautiful way to take in your last glimpses of the Andamans, especially at places like Aberdeen Bazaar, Junglighat and Marina Park. If sunsets are your thing then the coconut palm fringed beach of Corbyns Cove is not too far a travel. Being the only beach in Port Blair it makes it a memorable adieu to this amazing trip.
