Stornoway is a small fishing town with a population of around 28,000 people. At one time, during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the population was only about 10,000 but during the herring fishing season this would quickly rise to just over 30,000 with thousands of fishermen and other workers taking up residence for the season. Today the fishing fleet is tiny by comparison but the highly active industry helps to add a great deal of interest to the town.
